Causes

Put simply bad breath is caused by an accumulation of bacteria and plaque that exist in the mouth, these cause the odour that we commonly associate with bad breath. The production of saliva helps to keep the multiplication of these at bay and this is the reason that you may wake up with bad breath, because this is the time when you product the least amount of saliva.

Excess food that remains in the mouth is also a huge cause of bad breath as it begins to decay in the mouth releasing a bad odour that is bad breath.

What you eat is what you get

Strong smelling foods like onion or garlic can also cause you to have bad breath, so it is important to consider how much of these foods you are consuming. This is especially the case if you are already experiencing bad breath.

Hydrate

There will always be plaque, bacteria and excess food in the mouth, and there is nothing we could ever do to keep it completely clean. The best thing you can do is to make sure you are constantly drinking water and rinsing your mouth out. This is a great thing to do for its general health benefits, but also acts to clear the mouth of all the causes of bad breath.

It is also a good idea to avoid drinks that will create more bacteria and plaque in the mouth, for example, sugary drinks.

Flossing

We already talked about how excess food in the mouth can cause bad breath, but what about the food stuck in between your teeth? This presents another problem entirely because it cannot be removed by simply rinsing the mouth, and brushing will not always remove it completely. Therefore it is important to floss at regular intervals to ensure that the food between your teeth is removed.

Rotting food is also a breeding ground for plaque and bacteria and causes cavities in between your teeth.
