Dental health from child to adult

Combine teething and brushing

From a very young age it is so important for your child to have a healthy mouth.

Teething

One of the first steps of your child’s development begins with teething. This is where the teeth break through the gums for the first time and can cause your child to feel some pain and can make them irritable. One of the best things to do is to rub a clean finger on the gums or to give your child dry toast, which will soothe the pain. There are also a number of over the counter teething treatments if these do not work.

When your child’s first teeth come through you should use a small and soft toothbrush to brush them, and by doing this you are teaching your child good dental habits from a very young age, so when they do become older they will keep these habits.

First teeth

It is important that it is clear to your child that their oral health is important and this is where lifelong habits are formed. Investing time in teaching your child this is important because it can prevent a lot of problems in later life, and you should ensure your child takes care with their teeth even if they are going to lose the first set. You should think of these as a practice pair for your child to look after and it might be a good idea to reward your child for looking after their teeth.

It is a great idea to teach your child how to brush properly and how to reach all parts of the mouth also.

Dentist

A good idea is to have your child visit your dentist every six months to ensure that they are maintaining the correct technique, they will also learn that a dentist is an important tool in helping to maintain their teeth.

Losing teeth

At some point your child will begin to lose their baby teeth and it is important that they understand that it is still important to take care of these teeth regardless of the fact that they will be gone in a short period of time. There needs to be a continuity of the habits that they have developed and you can tell them that they need to maintain it because their permanent teeth will be coming through, if they haven’t already started.
