On Thursday June 30, 2011 over 200 residents came to Delores Bennett Park in the Northend community for Detroit Parent Network’s (DPN) On the Block Thursdays. This family fun event is a part of the DPN’s Summer Outreach 2011 Campaign.
“We thought it was fantastic,” said Ken Colman, DPN deputy director, public policy and communication.
Everything from refreshments, a bounce house for kids, and DJ services were provided by volunteers. Parents danced, teens played basketball, little kids played games, and a few others sat down and watched. There was also a singing competition.
Damesha Pirce is a parent who previously volunteered as a summer associate for the Detroit Parent Network organization. “This time I’m working with parents since I usually work with kids,” said Pirce, who enjoyed the program and plans to work with DPN again. “You can reach out to kids but you really need their parents.”
The parties will continue throughout the summer (until September 14) in various Detroit neighborhoods each Thursday. The next “On the Block” event will take place in the Osborn community.
It only costs $5 to join DPN. For more information about Detroit Parent Network please call (313) 309-1617 or go to www.detroitparentnetwork.org.
